The story as narrated

A woman approaches a well in Samaria under the glare of the midday sun. It is the hottest part of the day, a time she likely chose to avoid the judgmental stares of her neighbors. She expects to be completely alone. But sitting by the stones is Jesus. He looks at her, crossing deeply ingrained societal boundaries, and simply asks her for a drink. She is taken aback, as Jews and Samaritans normally avoided one another. Yet Jesus bridges the divide, shifting the conversation from physical thirst to a deeper spiritual reality. He tells her that if she knew who was speaking to her, she would ask him, and he would give her living water. She thinks of ordinary water, not understanding that he is offering something to quench her weary soul. Then, Jesus reveals the truth of her hidden life. He sees the parts you try to hide, yet he still meets you with boundless grace. She came to the well looking for water, but she left having found the Messiah.
