The story as narrated

I couldn't believe what I was looking at. It was huge, dark, and utterly ominous. My back was pressed against a rough tree trunk in the Sam Houston National Forest. The bark dug into my shoulders as I stood perfectly still, staring toward the edge of our camp. Beyond the camper's faint glow, something massive stood in the darkness. I could barely make out its shape, but it was enormous. Behind me, inside the tent, a zipper opened. I slowly turned my head and raised one finger to my lips, motioning for them to stay inside. They had no idea what was standing out there. To understand how I ended up alone in the darkness, staring at something I couldn't explain, we have to go back to earlier that night. I had teamed up with a Bigfoot research group to explore the Texas wilderness. As the sun disappeared, the forest reclaimed the darkness. Todd and I headed toward the far side of a bridge, scanning the shoreline with a thermal camera. We were about to head back when everything changed. A massive crash exploded through the bushes beside us. I spun around and caught the unmistakable shape of a broad back and massive shoulders before it vanished. Then the bushes erupted again. Something moved quickly through the forest, and I took off after it. Branches whipped my face as the ground dropped away. Behind me, Todd shouted, asking what I saw. I didn't know. The forest closed around me, and every tree looked like a motionless person in the dark. I slowly turned my head. Nothing. But then I felt it—that primitive feeling that something was watching me. I headed back toward Todd. A month later, while reviewing my camera footage, I discovered something terrifying. Hidden in the darkness behind me was an eye. Something had been exactly five feet away. I had been standing there talking to my camera, completely unaware that a massive creature was right over my shoulder. We continued deeper into the forest. At one point, the insects stopped completely. When an entire forest suddenly becomes silent, you pay attention. We followed the sound of something moving through the water and found massive footprints pressed into the mud, twelve inches long and five inches across. Later, Robert spotted a huge figure on his thermal camera moving incredibly fast through the trees. It took off like lightning. We decided to return to camp, not realizing the most frightening encounter was still waiting. Robert headed into the woods to find the others, leaving me alone near the tent. For a moment, everything was quiet. Then, a blood-curdling squeal erupted from across the field. A wild pig sounded like it was fighting for its life, thrashing in the darkness. Whatever was attacking it sounded incredibly powerful. Then came a sharp snap, followed by instant, terrifying silence. My heart was pounding. Behind me, the tent zipper started to move. I was about to tell my friends to stay still when a tiny flicker caught my eye. Roughly a hundred feet away, I saw eyeshine. I didn't move. I barely breathed. As my eyes adjusted, a shape emerged among the trees. It stepped out of the forest and onto the short grass, turning to look directly at me. It appeared hunched over for a moment, then stood upright, revealing its true size. I couldn't see a face, just a massive silhouette that seemed to swallow all the light. It was staring directly at me. Every instinct told me not to move. Then, in the blink of an eye, the creature turned and disappeared into the vegetation. This experience became part of my documentary, Searching for Sasquatch. The thermal footage shows a figure standing a foot and a half above six-foot bushes. Whatever was out there was impossibly big. To this day, the thought that bothers me most is that eye I discovered in the earlier footage. If it was the same creature, that night wasn't the first time it had seen me. It had been watching us long before we ever saw it. So if you're heading into the woods this October, bring extra batteries, keep your eyes open, and wear your running shoes.
