This man was shot repeatedly, lost an eye, lost a hand, survived two plane crashes — and still lived to 83.
His name was Adrian Carton de Wiart, and his military career sounds almost impossible.
During the Boer War, he was shot in the stomach and groin — and survived.
Years later, fighting in Somaliland, he was shot twice in the face. He lost his left eye and part of his ear... then returned to war.
During the First World War, another injury cost him his left hand, and he was later shot in the hip and ankle.
Somehow, he kept fighting — and his bravery during the Battle of the Somme earned him the Victoria Cross.
Then came World War Two.
His plane crashed into the Mediterranean, he was captured by the Italians, and even in his sixties, he repeatedly attempted to escape — once tunnelling out of his prison camp.
